Graduate Education in Greenville

Taskforce(s): Tuition and Scholarships, Information Technology, Distribution Systems, Continuing and Executive Education

Contacts: Bruce Rafert, Sean Williams, Jim Witte

Situation:  The opportunity to develop programs, particularly professional, self-pay master's programs, to serve the Greenville market has not yet been exhausted. We currently have successful programs in Greenville, particularly at the University Center like Master of Arts in Teaching, MBA, and nursing with others like Family and Neighborhood Life growing their presence. We feel that other programs, and particularly professional programs, can expand their presence in Greenville.

Under the current model of reimbursement, the Greenville programs provide a great deal of revenue for the main campus as well as sustain other programs (both MAT and MBA, for example,  support operations both for the program itself as well as for their colleges). The University Center has stated it's desire to grow, has space to grow, and programs their provide significant financial return.

We believe Clemson should discern ways to expand it's presence in Greenville, particularly at the University Center but at other sites as well since these sites primarily support "self pay" students.

Some financial notes about the University Center. This information is from a discussion with UC staff.

  • It is funded through a line item in the state budget.
  • 100% of the revenue gained from the programs offering degrees there goes to the department offering the degree. No money is currently given to the UC in support costs.

Item 2 will have to change if Item 1 is ever affected, which this year it was.
