You may have heard that South Carolina as a whole does not rate highly in the national K-12 public education arena. While that’s true, the upstate has many of the best schools in the state – many of which have won national awards for excellence. There are also outstanding private schools in the area. The state was recently ranked number one in the nation in education standards, assessment and accountability in Quality Counts 2007, the 11th in a series of annual report cards on the state of education reform published by leading journal Education Week.

The Upstate public school system includes a number of general magnet schools as well as magnet schools focused on science and math, and the arts. For more information about magnet school options, visit http://www.publicschoolreview.com/state_magnets/stateid/SC.

The South Carolina Department of Education maintains a website for parents moving into the state at http://ed.sc.gov/visitors/parents/guide.html. You will find links to district and school report cards, statistics, regulations and procedures.

Private school options include church-sponsored schools, Montessori schools, schools for children with learning challenges, and general academic-focused private schools. You can find a list at http://sciway.net/edu/k12/k12private.html; the site contains links to the vast majority of private schools in the state.

The upstate is home to a handful of schools that support the educational needs of young students from other countries. These include:

  • The Michelin French School (864-268-5600, or email efm@peoplepc.com)
  • The Japanese School (Craig Lundgren at 864-288-5544) http://www.jaasc.org/school.htbml
  • The Korean Saturday School (Sook Yoon at 864-288-2215)
  • The German Saturday School (Die Deutsche Schule) ( Astrid Simon at 864-587-6272) http://www.deutscheschule.net/
